8 Mile Run – Check

I have to admit I was a little nervous about today’s run, but it went very well & I didn’t have the muscle tightness around my knee like I did last weekend. I’m going to continue to be diligent with my PT exercises & hopefully I can continue to increase distance without any issues.

I ran a new route around the surrounding neighborhoods & it felt like those 8 miles flew by. In fact, my legs felt like they could have kept going forever. I love runs like that!

I slowed it down a bit because it was hot out there today. My heart rate was elevated & I don’t think I hydrated well enough. Also, I was an idiot & forgot to apply sunscreen. My sunscreen is now going right next to my Garmin so that doesn’t happen again. I only got slightly burnt on my nose & cheeks, but I’ve got some crazy tan lines going on now.

I made another smoothie when I got home, chocolate peanut butter strawberry banana!

So yummy!

There was an article in Women’s Health about how pets have a positive impact on your health.

I should be really healthy since I have five! Ha!

Speaking of pets, my husband & I are getting ready to take the dogs on a walk, so I should have a really high step count for today. 🙂

I Drink My Smoothie From A Schooner

Thank goodness it’s the weekend! Unfortunately, I started it off with another exceedingly crappy night of sleep.

I don’t know why my body just doesn’t want to shut down. It’s so frustrating.

I did not want to get out of bed today, but I opened my eyes & this is what I saw..

Toby was begging me to get up. lol. So I did & went to the gym. I did 3 miles on the elliptical, 5 miles on the recumbent bike, strength training (legs), PT exercises, & a 2 min plank.

When I got home I was in the mood for a smoothie. I don’t think I’d had one since last summer, so I got my blender out & added 1/2 c. blueberries, 1/2 banana, 1/2 c. plain Greek yogurt, 1 c. almond milk, 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder, 1 tbsp. peanut butter, 1 tbsp. ground flaxseed, & ice. I usually add spinach, too, but I’m out.

If you’re not drinking your smoothies out of a schooner, you’re doing it wrong.

Now, I’m trying to figure out where we can take the dogs hiking, because the trail along the river where we normally hike is completely flooded, which also changes my plans for my 8 mile run tomorrow. I’m a little bit nervous to see how my knee feels during my run, but I’m ahead on my training plan, so if I have any pain at all, I’m going to back down & focus on my PT exercises. I think they’re helping already. I haven’t felt anymore tightness around my knee, but we’ll see how I feel tomorrow.

Hope you’re all having a great weekend so far!

Must Get More Sleep

This has been a rough week. I’ve been working overtime at work & even though I’m super tired when I get home, it takes me a long time to wind down. I’m definitely not getting enough sleep. There really needs to be more hours in a day.

Today’s (technically yesterday’s) workout (I’m a little late) was a 4.5 mile run, strength training (hips & glutes), & those PT exercises I talked about in my last post.

I did try to take a short nap, but here is what happens.

That’s a 90 lb lab on top of me. Ellie does not understand the meaning of personal space.

This has been my new favorite thing this week.

Iced caramel macchiato coffee! I love my Keurig!

PT Day

I decided to spend today’s workout doing PT exercises & focusing on my weaker leg. My training plan (Hal Higdon’s Novice 1) says I can either do a 3 mile run or cross training on Wednesdays for the remainder of my training, so I think it’s best to go with cross training along with PT exercises.

I’ve been noticing some tightness around my knee on my weaker leg now that my long runs are 7+ miles. This is around the point I started having issues last time, so I want to be as cautious & careful as possible.

I’ve been researching articles about muscle imbalances because my right leg continues to get stronger & my left leg seems to be at a standstill. I found a really good article here & I’m going to start doing my strength training this way. I think my job is definitely contributing to my muscle imbalance issue. I’m trying to be more conscious of my movements & even standing differently at work so that my weight is on my left leg as much as possible.

The root of my problem seems to be a weak left hip so I did these exercises in this YouTube video & I’m going to be doing these everyday from now, along with some of my previous PT exercises.

So, I’m trying to do everything I possibly can to prevent another injury. Hopefully this tightness doesn’t develop into pain & my training continues to go smoothly.

Have you tried these Belvita biscuits?

They are so good!

Week 7 of Training

Today’s workout was a 4.5 mile run outside & a 2 min plank. It feels like summer, upper 70’s & sunny! This is my kind of running weather!

Here is my Fitbit weekly progress report..

I tried a new food that I really like, avocados! I’ve had guac before, but I’d never tried plain avocados, mainly because I didn’t know what to do with them. I cut half of one up in some cottage cheese & it’s delicious!

I need more ideas!

What is your favorite way to eat avocados?

Sunday Long Run Day

I ended up with 22,760 steps yesterday, a new record for me!

I didn’t think my legs felt tired today until I started running. One mile in & I said to myself, “Oh man, I’m in trouble” but, after another mile, I was feeling a little more positive. I think it was more of a mental thing. Once I stopped thinking about it & started paying attention to the beautiful scenery & got lost in thought, I didn’t think anymore about my legs being tired. In fact, I ended up going 7.5 miles & it was a great run. 🙂

When I got home, I did some stretching & foam rolling, & I’m feeling pretty good.

I don’t really have any plans for the rest of the day, other than some cleaning & hanging out with these guys.

The rule in our house is that you must have at least two animals in your lap at all times, sometimes three.

Oh, & I can’t stop watching How The Universe Works on Netflix. It’s fascinating & I’m kind of a nerd.

How are you spending this beautiful Sunday? At least, I hope it’s beautiful wherever you are!

My Very Awesome Day

Today has been awesome! We took the dogs hiking along the Wabash River & it was an absolutely gorgeous day. I love spring! I took a lot of pictures because everything looked so pretty today!

I’m not sure which the dogs get more excited about, the hike or the car ride! lol

After our hike which ended up being about 6 miles, I went to the gym for cross training & strength training. I did 4 miles on the elliptical, 2 miles on the stationary bike, & strength training (legs). We also stopped at the Pink Walrus for some frozen yogurt!

I definitely think I earned it today. I’m already at over 22,000 steps!

I’m taking it easy for the rest of the evening so I’m rested up for my 7 mile run tomorrow! I’m really looking forward to it! 🙂
